They train the Air Force guys alongside the Army , Marines and Navy at Fort Sam Houston.I tried to get into the Air Force AFSC of the Biomedical Tech role to cross train in, but no slots were open to re train in as it's a small career field which usually had nice bonuses to retain people knowing they can make decent money on the outside. I think the training is joint Service at Sheppard AFB in TX if I remember correctly.
Now, since I honorably separated, I work in a RF systems, subscriber maintenance role which has been quite lucrative in the 6 figure income.
By the time he gets out, that may not go far and he'll need to supplement with his programming skillzThat MOS requires a 6 year enlistment. No signing bonus. One of the tougher technical MOS's to make it through AIT and he had to have transcripts from his math classes ready when he signed up. Those guys walk out the door into 6 figure jobs.
They gave him 72 hours towards an associates degree from the course work so he's got another 18 hours to get that. Even working in his job he should be able to knock that out in less than 4-6 months. Then he can finish his undergrad over the next 5 years ezpz. My oldest son had his bachelors by the time he gout out of 4 years in the air force and then went on to his masters in environmental science. All generously paid for by .gov. Middle son did his time eating crayons in the Marines before he got his engineering degree. Paid for by .gov. I did my undergrad courtesy of .gov on the old montgomery/GI bill. Wer'e like a pack of welfare mothers over here.By the time he gets out, that may not go far and he'll need to supplement with his programming skillz
My MOS qualified me to do every thing from delivering babies to giving enemas. There was a guy at the base hospital that had diarrhea so bad he wound up with an 8ft diameter puddle all over the floor. We called the janitor before we cleaned him up, so that we wouldn't slip and fall in it.Well at least he's smart. My MOS qualified me to be a janitor. Lol.
Good post, thanksMy youngest son finally gets done with Army AIT next week. Almost 14 months in training . One of the Army's longest schools. 68A Biomedical Equipment Specialist. Medical Corps stuff. Not quite top of his class but a good second. He'll take it. Heading home for a few weeks for recruiter duty then onto his permanent duty station at Fort Campbell to work in a Veterinary clinic of all things. Chill duty. Setting up a fishing charter now.
He's not the programmer. Thats my middle kid who won the state coding competition in high school. . Youngest one ( the Army one wer'e talking about ) made his "fortune" trading NFT's not actually writing the code. He's still loaded. All three of them have radically different personalities.By the time he gets out, that may not go far and he'll need to supplement with his programming skillz
