There has been a lot of talk in various threads about kids with access to firearms. In my opinion it depends on the kids and the parents and should not be mandated by the State. Some of us were just fine having access to our own firearms as young as 11, and there are some 22 year-olds that I would not trust with any gun.

One thought on the matter crossed my mind this weekend and set me Googling. How many defensive gun uses by teens would have resulted in a negative outcome if the kids did not have access to a firearm? Since local newspapers and television stations delete older stories, I set my search for 10 years back. While I found over 30, as I feared, some of the online articles were deleted. While IP44 only deals with minors, because the recent outcry to prohibit all "kids" under 21 from owning any firearm I did include an 18 year old widowed mother, a 19 year old and a 20 year old college student who was given a revolver by her dad.

So here they are along with their approximate reporting dates

Just as DC and Hollywood live in their own reality bubble, so does every state capital. Salem, Sacramento, Olympia. They may not all be rich but they are well protected.

These stories deny politicians TV time. A governor can't come out and praise the local PD, state police & the F B.I. if an 11 yo girl blows away the would be home invader. No, tears always are a better story even though the mantra is...No more tears and well wishers. Take away the guns.

The latest push from the left is gun owners wannabe cops and have small dicks. It's being repeated again and again because the last, whatever they were trying wasn't working. When the government says THEY will keep you safe but don't. People start thinking, maybe they can't.

Thank you for utilizing your Google-foo.

Prima facie, to people who don't own guns, keeping firearms away from children makes perfect sense. To a responsible gun owner, the logic makes as much sense as living in a rattler infested area and just saying, "keep away from the snakes."
Part of being a responsible gun owner is to teach our children gun safety, care and respect.

To me, the whole concept of requiring guns to be safely locked away is not to protect children, it's based on fear:
  • fear of what kids will do when they get their hands on firearms, (Do you think the consistent degradation of societal mores has anything to do with this?)
  • Fear that this remains the same undocumented loophole for criminals to get their hands on guns.
