For those that have asked about home freeze dryers there is a group on Facebook that sometimes has ads for used or scratch and dent units. Some of these units can be had for 50% of retail.
Home freeze dryers from Harvest Right are an answer to buying freeze dried items from places like Mountain House. You can do a batch of about 8 Mountain House-like mylar pouches of food for about $3 including the bags, and your food will then keep for up to 25 years. Just add water or juice to rehydrate. It's better than a dehydrator because freeze drying preserves the texture and flavor of the food.
Power requirements are a 15 to 20 amp, 120VAC circuit, with a 20 amp dedicated circuit being ideal. We have had no issues running ours on a 15 A dedicated circuit.
