Now that will be interesting if it stands. Wife used to make her own wine for a while. LONG time ago she bought me a kit to make beer. I was working some LONG damn hours and never had time to play with it. One kid took it and tried to make some. He said it was not drinkable. Be kind of fun to see if they make mini home stills now. :D

Sure, now they do this, now that I've been on the wagon for some 15 months or so…

Oh well, let's hope this stands and expands to all Americans. No reason one should be allowed to cook up his one recipes to imbibe…

Damn, out of curiosity I looked at Amazon and damned if they do not already sell the damn things. Does not say anything about legalities. So I have to guess must have been a lot of people doing this for a good while now.

Technically they can be used to distill water so unless caught in the act, it would be difficult to be convicted. Plus they are more worried about you selling it and them not getting their tax bucks.

I have some good recipes (allegedly) if this comes to fruition, and anybody wants them.... :)

Been in and out of the alcohol industry for years. Yeah the little home stills have been for sale for years but its not legal to make distilled alcohol with them. Beers limited at 50 gallons per year per person. I used to make way more than that at home and I wondered why I was gaining weight.

When I had some more time I looked at some info on the first one that came up. Said of course you could make any kind of liquor but also essential oils. I have to guess the feds just have no interest in someone making the very small batches these home things would make so they have never put pressure on them not to sell.
Seems kind of fun but, I figure it would be another of those things that would be something I would play with for a while and then get tired of and it would gather dust. To make anything of real quality would I have to guess be far more work than it would be worth compared to just buying a bottle. Still intriguing that this was going through the court system for a good while. I had never heard of this case.

It's all in the mash and temperature and post distillation conditions. You can make some decent liquor at home but even the best whiskey right out of the still will taste like crap .

I kind of guessed at that. Since the good stuff for one thing is aged a long time. Never paid much attention but do remember reading that a LOT of time and work went into the recipes of the big name stuff. Lot of trial and error kind of thing. Would take a lot of the fun out if you had to let the damn stuff sit for years after you made it just to see what you ended up with. Never tried "moonshine" before. So no idea what the stuff they used to make that way tasted like.

Well....I disagree. It comes out either a moonshine or a neutral spirit, which if made with good ingredients (simple cracked feed corn and some sugar works great) is wonderful tasting. Add a handful of toasted oak chips to your mason jar and in a couple weeks it's a very decent whisky.
