The "M" variant was developed originally for the FBI.

IIRC the M version is a 4th generation Glock 19 with some modifications that the FBI wanted. The mods were nice enough that Glock incorporated them into the Gen 5 guns.

It is a precuror to the Gen 5 that was developed from a specific set of specs from the FBI. It is basically a Gen 5 with a few twists...
