Been considering selling the Yugo M24/47 to fund a .30-06. The alternative is to find a M48 bolt then have a gunsmith swap the barrels then find a M48 stock.

As much as I like the Mauser, its mostly just the K98s I liked. And 8mm ammo isn't available anywhere locally.

I'm not talking about converting the mauser. The barrel that's on there has rifling too worn out and I have a few spare barrels as well. I was just trying to see if its better to get the barrel swapped with one of the spares or just sell it all and get a .30-06 instead.

Trying to keep costs relatively low... I like the 1903A3 a lot but it would be a bit out of the price range considering I'd also need a scope to compensate for my eyesight past 300 meters.

Its not just ammo availability, though I can get .30-06 and can get it at any store here.

Its also about costs, for the Mauser I need to get a M48 bent bolt, a M48 stock, have a gunsmith swap the barrels, and then drill and tap for rings. As much as I like the mauser I'm not sure its worth the cost. I do still want a bolt action, and prefer .30-06 and 8mm over .308.

I don't mind a project as much as I mind the cost.

Was mostly considering a savage or a Remington 700 originally and either making my own wood stock (for a project to spend time on) or just buy one.

For practically the same reasons mentioned here....

I would just go and buy what I wanted. Rather than customize a Mauser.

Aloha, Mark

A build is out of the question for me by price itself.

Whats your top end price? Knowing that may help steer suggestions. Personally, I lean toward sell the stuff and get a gun you know you want/will like. I like the new American rifles by Ruger, especially more than the Rem 700 series. A Ruger American centerfire in .30-06 or .308 would be the bees knees.

$400-$500 for rifle itself. Already have an optic I'd want in mind.

I'm also trying to find a controlled feed, but I wouldn't know what is what as far as current productions go. I donkt think the savage or Remington 700 are controlled feed?
