Looking over the recent prepping thread topics, I noticed hardly any discussions around prepping foods. Is everybody all set? Have you been priced our? Did you decide it's not necessary any longer? Are you keeping it uber secret?

I put away about 200,000 calories worth of storage on my person. Now I'm looking to restock the cupboards. Since I don't have funds for firearm stuff, I thought I would try to find some cheap shelf stable calories. Money goes a lot further on food deals vs gun deals. The food deals require more time and travel though.

Food storage? You buy it and then store it.

I get my long-term food at the bishop's pantry (Mormon staples outlet). I don't buy it to re-sell and they sell it for what they sell it for so it makes it pretty simple. You buy it and then store it.

I've been working on expanding my garden and canning. Things are just starting to be ready to harvest. Canned some beans and will do some more beans, beets, and carrots in the coming months. I've started saving some seeds to experiment with next season. I've spent too much on the garden this year to purchase any freeze-dried foods. My budget is taxed. Our next purchases will be 2 firearms before the inevitable ban (I'm expecting the election to go the opposite of the way I would like it to). Likely next month, purchase, not the ban, of course.

Me too. I plan on living off of my stored calories. LOL.

. Is everybody all set?
Mostly all set, for now. I can always stock more and more food (am I preparing for 3 days or 3 weeks or 3 years?), but right now I am looking at other prepper priorities. When those are dealt with I might decide to extend the food preparations.

Oh, wait ... you asked is everybody all set. I guess my answer is "I don't know". :D

Budget allowing & if you all were considering buying AR platform:

Consider buying stripped lowers. Then you could take your time buying parts to build them up as you wish.

Build uppers, or buy complete's shipped to your door.

Time being the consideration of course, however may be a nice winter project...

Edit, adding: realize parts may also be banned. However, MORE LIKELY would be the FFL transferable parts being banned initially. Then after a time parts. Point being, MORE LIKELY to have time available to source parts.

Also & notable IF there were a national ban proposed, ALL THINGS firearms would likely get sold out or crazy priced. So there is that...not exclusively contradictory thoughts. Just mentioning such.

That's definitely the right approach IMO. Granted, other states may learn from WA legislature's mistakes and make laws more explicitly covering parts. They tried here but the way it was written an "assault weapon" cannot be constructed without the receiver, so parts remain in play.

So... I guess there is a silver lining to anti-gunners not knowing beans about firearms after all! :s0140:

We don't buy freeze dried foods. we de-hydrate, vacuum pack then freeze. We'll be doing White Peaches tomorrow.

I'm not adding to my existing supplies. In fact, I'm culling through things and using up older dated items.

I turned 74 this year, I'm worrying less and less about long term food storage.

We did put up about 30 jars of salal jam lately. I guess I could live off that for a little while if I had to. That might be one way to use up my #10 can of "pilot crackers," a.k.a. hard tack.

I would be comfortable with a three month supply to bolster my stored on body calories.

I prefer the store what I eat and eat what I store method. This means rotating food frequently. I have not done a good job of this lately so there is food in the cupboards that needs to be chucked and replaced.

The criteria for my food supply: be cheap, easy to prepare, require little fuel to cook and use little non-recoverable water to prepare. It also must be at least semi-enjoyable to eat. Dried beans are out, they take way to much fuel to cook.

Meat is one area where I will rely on canned food for mid term storage and eat fresh as long as it's available.

Water is another area that I need to work on. I need to purchase some additional water filters and keep my water containers full and rotated.

I commend those who keep years worth of food on hand. Personally I can't envision a scenario where something else wouldn't cause my death in a few months if no outside food was available. For that reason and storage space limitations, three months worth of calories will be my goal.

I'm weeks away from picking fruit from my trees and freeze drying....

I have a couple places at the coast I'm stashing food for snacking and more while working and more...
