Hey guys,

I'm sorry if this has been answered to death; I did do a few google searches but my question wasn't answered in those threads that I saw.

I'm here in Marion Co Oregon, and they require two "local" character references on my CHL application. I don't really feel like asking my co-workers to be a character reference and most of my buddies live in SW Washington across the river. Any idea if Washington residents fit the "local" requirements for the character reference?

Thanks for the help guys!

So, just did this for my wife (in Washington county) listed our oldest daughter (over 18) and myself. The application indicated that relatives were ok. She's got her permit and neither our daughter nor myself spoke with the sheriffs department...

Check the application requirements for Marion county on the application or call the CHL unit at the sheriffs office...

I concur with the above responses, it doesn't really make any difference if they are local or out of state.

I'm from Marion County, live in Washington, got my CHL in Columbia County and also used references from both states...:D

I concur that its BS that you even need references to exercise a constitutional right. They are gonna run an extensive background check on you, what good are references for then its not like their gonna call them if you fail the check...

But I digress, just put anyone you know you dont have a choice. I agree I would not use coworkers.

i have a marion county issued CHL one of my references was currently fighting a war in afghanistan. the others were marion county residents. i dont think it matters.

For mine I had a reference that was in CA and I didn't have any issues, just put down a few people who you know and know you can handle firearms responsibly and you should be good.

I simply listed two family members that knew I knew how to use firearms responsibly, that is all you need.

It was 16 years ago when I moved here and applied at the WA county Sheriff's office. I used one ref in CA and one in HI. They were contacted back then.

In Benton County they also ask for two references. And you need signatures from those references. I used my next door neighbors, who also have CHLs.

Sorry for the late reply guy! I really appreciate all the feedback. I ended up using one Washington reference and one Oregon reference. They said it wasn't a big deal if I used out of state references which mirrors what you've all been saying.

Went in for my scheduled appointment today got fingerprints & photo done. Receipt says "45 days"; hoping it doesn't take that long but from what I've read it sounds about standard for Marion county.
