Thanks for posting this. My Grandson is a Civil Engineer and has worked on many high rises so I've sent him a link. I'm sure he will appreciate it. Looking forward to his comments.

It is not that I think that the Chinese don't have the engineering knowledge and expertise, it is that they have proven time and again, that they have one of the most corrupt environments in the world (India is another) where their organizations and corporations and powerful individuals will cut corners to make the most profit. It is interesting that this "socialist paradise" is more corrupt than many capitalist countries.
The USA was that way (somewhat) too - until we held the corrupt (some of them anyway) accountable for their actions. We complain about our government being intrusive, but it is the building and zoning codes that make sure that buildings are safe and built in the proper locations (not in flood zones, etc.) and agencies like the FDA who make sure our toothpaste doesn't have diethylene glycol in it, and our dog food doesn't kill our pets, and the EPA makes sure we don't have cities that look like this:
Or at least try.
Of course, if Trump has his way, we may go backwards - at least China is trying to improve.

YES, it's leased land from the Chinese Communist Govt.
BTW....a lot of hotels in Waikiki are built on leased land. Bishop Estate owns the land. So.....say that a hotel in Waikiki falls because, of shoddy construction work.

I guess....at least at this point, I'm more upset about how some RICH & GREEDY CHINESE PEOPLE are taking advantage of the situation(s) in China.....
Say that......
XYZ Construction (made up name) had built a building that collapsed in China. Say that, the construction company took many short cuts. Humm......it's not my land. And besides, I'll increase my profits just by using inferior products. No one will find out. If it ever comes to light.....I'll be long gone anyway. So, XYZ Construction's CEO becomes a billionaire selling million dollar apartments in that building. His kids are sent to America and Europe to be educated. Their tuition is paid for by hard working regular Chinese folks. Those same folks that paid enormous sums to buy their homes and later died in that building when it fell.
OK....hold the CEO accountable? Rrrrright.....
Wait a second.......he died 1 year before the building fell.
So what about?
His kids and his family are and will still be, billionaires (just like in America). Not to mention, that because they were educated in America and Europe......they now have great jobs. Maybe, even with the Chinese government. Or,with an American company that wanted "influence" in China.
But hey.....it could happen in America too.
Yup, maybe. But probably, just not on the scale of China. Thank GOD.

Oh well......my father, brother in law, girlfriend's father, business partner, etc.... is a BIG SHOT CHINESE GOVT OFFICIAL. We'll see how far your law suit will go.
*My VN girlfriend says that in VN there are reports of deaths, due to tainted Chinese foods.

It probably has parts in it from China but I bet it's built and held to a much higher standard than hotels that are built in 15 days in China. Also it's unlikely the roof of my car will fall in and crush me to death if we have an earth quake

In my first civilian job after "retiring" from the military, I traveled overseas a lot, often ending up in Hong Kong for 3-4 days a couple times a year. I had my usual spots to eat, drink, shop and hang out, always including a tram ride up Victoria Peak to look down at the skyline, Kowloon, etc.
I'd sit and marvel at the constant construction of new skyscrapers, the skill of the sky-crane operators and the ubiquitous bamboo scaffolding. The bamboo trick worked on the Great Wall, and it doesn't seem they've found any need to replace that technology in the past 23 centuries. Amazing.

When you don't have to deal with unions, , building codes, inspectors or safety regulations you can get stuff done quick.
