I'm having a hard time seeing the appeal of carrying with a light but know it's popular right now? Anyone have a good argument either way? To me it doesn't seem worth the extra bulk when it's so unlikely to be in a situation I need it. I have a bedside drawer gun with a light for night around the house

Light or no light.

Much ink has been spilled and lots of cyberspace filled with this debate.

Use what works for you in your situation.
Practice with what you use ....often.
Familiarize yourself with your surroundings , both day and night....

And remember that when under stress...
The mind can see and hear what it expects to see and hear...which may not be what is actually there.

…I still haven't made my way out of the last hole.
(Don't even think of putting that one in the "out of context" thread)

There are quite a few opinions expressed in the thread linked above. Some of the latest pistol-mounted lights are surprisingly compact. If someone wants or needs one, I wouldn't be the person to discourage them from purchasing it.

Personally, I don't carry with a light. Reason is, I'm inside when it's dark nearly 100% of the time under my circumstances. When I'm out in civilized areas, there's light everywhere.
When it's dark out on my property I'll have a separate light generally, or carry one of my ARs on a slight that have a light. Just not my CCWs. If you feel you need it, carry one. We have cougars, black bears, bobcats and coyotes. So at night if I'm doing stuff on the property after dark I've got an AR with a light and the area already lit up with flood lights, headlights and my SUV has a police light. But that's MY situation.

In general though, my basic fits all advice is:

Can you carry a light? Carry it
Does it bother you? If so, do you ever end up in a situation where you need one? Carry it
Do you have to ask the question if you should carry a light? Carry it
It's only if you know you don't NEED a light that you shouldn't carry one.

But like I said, that's my one size fits all general advice so there's more nuance to it.

My ARs have lights, the ones that don't, have lights ready to mount up for when I am going to be out past dark and I wanna take a certain build out. It takes me about 2 minutes to get it on there.

Oh this again. It really comes down to preferences and priorities. All my defensive firearms have lights on them. I like having the option. To me they are not "bulky", and the "extra weight" is negligible. Current carry is Gen3 Glock22 with the TLR1HL and a Holosun EPS in a Bravo Concealment IWB holster. Doesn't bother me at all.

Concealed - carry no light. I carry a handheld light in my pocket. I like simple and the light creates more bulk than I prefer and is uncomfortable for me personally. I used to carry with a Surefire X300 daily. After smashing my balls enough times the light was repurposed.

With that said if you wanna EDC a gun with a light on it more power to you.

There is no right or wrong answer. Just what works best for you and what you'll actually carry daily.

My holster - a Tenicor Sagax Lux 2 - works with a light or no light. If I'm carrying somewhere where I know with full confidence I'm going to be in a lit area the entire time - either home before sundown or will be indoors - I take the light off. Otherwise, I leave it on just in case. Seeing a light on the end of a gun is one extra bit of de-escalation if, say, I'm closing up the bar at 2am and someone wants to break in (this has happened to a coworker who carries on the job, as soon as the dudes saw the light they got out in a hurry).

Anecdotally, when training, I find that the extra weight at the front of my G48 MOS helps reduce recoil a bit since it's such a small gun, but it's not much of an issue either way.

An interesting aside on the topics of lights...
Did you know that on a Gen 3 Glock 23 if you put a light on it and really crank it down it will stiffen the frame enough that it increases the slide speed to the point that it won't properly feed? My wife had this issue on her service weapon, and no, she wasn't limp wristing it. The malfunction occurred when I fired it too. It only did it with full power loads, not with my plinker reloads. I called Glock and got a great tech on the phone that helped us diagnose the problem. The cure was +10% magazine springs from Wolff. Put those in and never had another issue.
All that said, I have a TLR1HL on my 23 that I pack around the farm for cats & bears. The LCP usually goes with me to town.
