Hello, I recently picked up a colt 727 style barreled upper and both apertures on the rear sight are really small. I was not planning on using an optic with this upper but I am now reconsidering due to the fact that both holes are tiny. I have another removable A2 style sight that has a much larger aperture to counter the very small one. I'm curious as to why it's like this, it seems like more of these style sights have a larger and a smaller aperture,, not 2 small ones.

Smaller apertures are more accurate. They act kinda like a lense... If your eyes are good enough. If not they are practically useless.

The good part is you can buy larger apertures. They are pretty common if you look.

Yah I understand why the smaller aperture is more accurate, just curious as to why it has both so small. It seems like the others I have seen, the "low light/close range" one is much bigger and the "normal range normal light " one is the same size as both on mine. So I've got 2 small holes and no big one haha. I'll have to search a bit more and find a replacement aperture.

Those look like National Match sights, from post #38 here

Colt also marketed another "M16A2 Carbine" variant, otherwise identical to the RO723/5, but that utilized instead of the "A1 style" recessed detent adjustable Field Sights, the USGI M16A2's "Match" sights - these variants were designated the RO727 and RO729, once again having an S-1-F and S-1-3 FCG respectively. For clarity, I will refer in the future only to the RO723 and RO727 S-1-F variants, but understand that when I talk about one, I'm also referring to its S-1-3 counterpart.

As others have stated, I believe your rear sight is a match rear a picture. I've used both A1 and A2 appitures and prefer the A1.

I have never used the large hole appitures on the A2 sight which is supposedly for limited visibility or moving targets.

I used to enjoy irons but at my age, I need full sun. If I didn't have my stuff in storage I would give you one as I have several.

Check at the larger fun shows.

Yah I actually found one online via a surplus store, so it is on the way. Thanks for the input, I am looking forward to getting this build together and try it out.

I was going to paraphrase @1775usmc who likes to say, "Dremel go brrrr", by saying, "Drill 'er out"!

Unless the aperture is valuable, a small drill bit in a pin vise would be my choice. With a number drill set, you have many options.
