Hi, I'm an aspiring young collector wondering what I can get my hands on in today's market. Are there any rifles or pistols you'd consider "good deals" at their going prices? I've been interested in Schmidt-Rubin rifles and old combloc pistols like the vz50 (or any interesting .32acp really). I also wouldn't mind getting my hands on some old parts kits, especially a VZ61 or AUG, but many places won't ship them to WA, and I don't know anyone in Oregon willing to help me.

It seems like there's never been a better time to get a more capable gun for less money on the new market, but also never a worse time to get something with history.

I've owned a lot of different milsurp weapons over the past 60 plus years.

You mention the Swiss K31, good choice. So much higher quality than just about any other middle 20th Century milsurp you can think of. Save your shekels for one, rather than settling for something less. They are all over Gunbroker for various prices, but originals in good condition are $350 to $600. Heck, Russian Mosin rifles are selling for that much and I confess to not understanding it. Mosins are gar-bage compared to the K31. In my humble opinion only.

The little Czech CZ50, I've never owned. But I've owned the later version, the CZ70 and I wasn't impressed. If you are set on something Czech and ex-military, you might find the CZ82 in .380 of interest. Those don't cost all that much.

I was thinking of getting a C&R license, which might help with some things. There's some debatably WA-legal stuff that local FFLs might be iffy on, but I was hoping I might be able to snag a MAS 49 from an out of state dealer.
There are still old school private sellers who will honor C&R License holders.

The CZ82 looks nice, I hear it's also C&R despite not being 50 years old, which is neat.

But on the subject of Czech .32s, I keep eyeing the VZ61 kits. I could print a CZAR (or the FRT version, the SSSzar). You can make one for like $350, its very alluring, especially with the January 1st NFA changes. Throw on a DIY suppressor and the original folding wire stock for $0 extra. Federally, it's all kosher. My only concern is facing the wrath of Bob Ferguson.

legal disclaimer: this is all a joke

Sadly no-one will ship a MAS 49/56 to Washington and een if they did, no FFL would transfer it to you. Too many features, threaded barrel, magazine fed, semi-auto, etc.

Get an M1 Garand, an M1 Carbine and an FN49 NOW, like NOW NOW, before they close that loophole next year.

I don't know about YOU, but for ME. I want my military surplus to have......

1) Parts availability
2) Ammo availability
3) Classic lines and handling characteristics.
4) Real history behind it.
5) Durability

All in no particular order.

And, of course, it should be CHEAP enough to shoot. Or sit for a long time and still not be a drain on me.

Aloha, Mark

Swiss Schmidt–Rubins (especially 1896/11s or K31s) are currently some of the best "value meets history" deals in a quality rifle. Expect to pay $400–700 depending on condition and model. ComBloc pistols and parts kits may be pricier or harder to find, but they're out there if you stay plugged into forums and shows. Let the hunt begin!

I've seen some .303 Enfields for sale lately for pretty reasonable prices. I always liked those actions and ammo is accessible too.

1903 (03 or the 03a3 variety will do)
No.4 enfield
No.1 enfield
Mosin m39
Mosin M91/30
K98k
M1 Garand
M1 carbine

Your respectable beginner milsurp collection.

Ohh, also Let me know if you want any of these, or the whole set. I'm thinning out the herd a bit.
