Look at it this way, would you intentionally hunt Brown bear with a .30-30? The .44 magnum doesn't match it. Read what gehrheart and oli700 posted, their only telling the truth.
I spent six years wandering around the Bristol bay area working line construction in some beautiful and remote locations and found the .44 magnum I carried to be a small comfort, the shotgun a bigger one. I never had any real issues with Brown bear, but some close calls. Those damned cow Moose with calf on the other hand, you really have to pay attention to them.
