Cover can easily work "both ways"...
Also don't forget to scan the whole area as well as keeping a eye on the target...
"Tunnel vision" or being hyper focused on the target and or just one spot , can leave you "blind" in other fields of view...

Please note that I am not fault finding here or blaming the Officer in the OP...just pointing out , something to remember , based on my experiences...

There are times when leaving cover can be a good option, but every situation is different. Being able to adapt to such things, is what will help one get a better advantage.

Good for the Officer that he survived. I would like to interview him, not about the incident itself...but what he was seeing and his thoughts as it was unfolding.
