But the 28 inch wasn't "optimum." All shorter lengths were slower. They needed a far longer barrel than 28inches to see what was "optimum." It needed to be long enough that the bullet has been slowing before exit, like the 22LR did in the study.

The linked test, as stated, only shows the relationship between barrel length and velocity of a specific cartridge using a limited variety of ammo. No representation of optimum barrel length is given. As others have posted, optimum barrel length can be dependent on a multitude of factors.
