I have a Gregory 65 that I jerry-rigged a rifle holder/scabbard onto that I really dig. Super light internal frame and I found mine on cl for half a hunski.

I too have a Badlands pack that I paid $100 bucks for at Cabelas, I was happy to have it but the new puppy faze has worn off and I am tempted to go back to my Allen backpack that I bought at Bi-mart. Which are on sale right now, 25% off. The Allen packs are tough, well organized and don't cost a lot.

Expensive, but the best small pack. Very well made and tough as nails. You could fill one with glass and bricks, run a marathon, and still have a great pack.
