I've often thought that the next step might be a molded powder charge that didn't need a case. You wouldn't need to eject anything because the case itself would be burnt up.

If they discontinue the M-16/M-4 they will either sell the surplus, use it up in training, or destroy it. My take is they destroy it for political reasons.

I thought this was tried by HK? Problem is lack of heat removal if I recall correctly .
