I'm still not so sure myself.
One of the things that interests me is how easy it is supposed to be to access when seated, like driving. Where I carry a gun normally, darn near 4 o'clock, I can draw the gun from that position if I don't have a cover shirt on, even with the seatbelt in place. But if I have a cover shirt on, like I did when we travelled to Grass Pants and back last weekend, I have to dig the shirt out of the way first. With the gun so far around my body I can't use my left hand as much help. I'm actually more concerned with reholstering the gun than I am with carrying it that way.

Ehhh.. I did have a double barrel .410 Derringer. I'll get some hate for this, but I'm not a .410 fan and have no desire for a Judge or whatever the Smith is. Just not my gig.
My truck gun is a rifle. Kind of a short one.

What's the deal with Colt 1911s really? My LGS owner seems to think they're the cream of the crop and I know there's plenty that would agree, but I've also seen a lot of posts showing poor machining/finishing, referencing periods of low quality throughout production, stuff like that. And it seems that some of that is expected in association with the brand, so why the great reputation if they're known for that?

Until you put one of these in your hands built during a nation at it greatest hight during War time conditions you might never get the answer, But I challenge you to pick either war and buy one take her out do a little shooting and let us know what you have learned

The judge is a gimmick gun.

Maybe so. But I was favorably impressed with the S&W Governor that I won at a Friends of NRA banquet. What impressed me most was, I got top dollar for it when I sold it. What could be better than that? (I did have a little fun shooting .45 LC and .45 ACP through it. But never tried .410's.) It actually was a solid built revolver - just not my cup of tea as they say. I've got a Circuit Judge rifle I won at a different banquet. Now there's a gimmick. It's kind of fun but rarely makes it out of the safe.

Has yet to stick anything. Hopefully it never has to. But it's comforting knowing that is there just in case I can't get to my firearm. It's strictly for defense. I don't even notice it's on me.

And it seems that some of that is expected in association with the brand, so why the great reputation if they're known for that?

Personally I don't see the appeal of 1911s as it stands currently. Besides WA and other states, the capacity is pretty restrictive, and I feel like the "really good triggers" people gush about on these still doesn't justify that. I also think they've drifted away from being marketed as EDC's; every time I see a 1911, it's got crazy 1000 year old oak tree grips, etching, finished in every color besides black, etc.

Not to say you couldn't carry something like that, I just personally don't see the appeal, and it seems to me that the EDC has now shifted to the 2011s, which are almost all manufactured to be aggressive and "duty" looking, while having the increased mag capacity, higher quality control standards across the board.
