What's the deal with Colt 1911s really? My LGS owner seems to think they're the cream of the crop and I know there's plenty that would agree, but I've also seen a lot of posts showing poor machining/finishing, referencing periods of low quality throughout production, stuff like that. And it seems that some of that is expected in association with the brand, so why the great reputation if they're known for that?

The Colt is squarely in the good middle 1911 or top of the low end. There's cheaper, RIA, which is supposed to be really quite good. Then there's the upper group that's semi custom and you're looking at $2500+ to get there. Then full custom, and the sky is the limit.

I've only had 1, it was a series 80 (I know I know) a lot of people don't like them. I got it for cheap it was in pretty rough shape and someone had done some redneck jeweling on it…. I had it cerakoted black. And he put a couple new springs in it. It looked and ran really well that said I don't have it anymore. I tried but I just don't have love for the 1911.

I enjoy my Colt Series '70 Government Model....shot it a lot...
Lots of memories....always has worked well for me.

What era Colt 1911....? lots were made...
Some like the Series 80 have fans .....and detractors.
Early ones and military issue ones...work well...but have small sights...which can be difficult to use for older eyes.

In any event...
Just like with any firearm...
Some will like it...others will not...a few will be indifferent to it.

Colt vs Kimber......discuss!
I recently picked up a used Kimber custom II GFO in 10mm for a smoking deal, I took it out once and I no longer have it. My best friend put 2 mags through it and had to have one so I transferred it to his wife for a surprise early birthday gift. I really wanna like 1911s but I never end up keeping them.

I really enjoy shooting my Colt MK IV Series 70/Model O pistol. This my fist .45 ACP with the heavy weight it stays on target.

I am thinking about adding a Springfield Armory 1911 as well. Since the legislation passed that you need a permit to buy later on, I would like to buy all of the firearms that I want before the new rules go into effect.

All the Colts I've seen had a fair amount of play in the slide to frame area... Definitely more than I'd expect to see for the price point, especially when a $500 RIA has a tighter fit. Otherwise they're pretty... I have a half dozen 1911's and none are Colt

If it ain't a Colt it is a 1911 clone!!!!

Nah, idk. Had a buddy with one that shot pretty well. For the $200 I paid for my Para Ordinance Expert I think it shoot just fine.

The holes in the paper seem to be the same size at least and it hits what I aim it at.

There's goods and bads in every brand I would think.

The Colt company is owned by CZ now. I think some critics might be surprised that since CZ took over, some of the issues re. 1911 QC have gone away.
