Whah are so good about bakelite mags? I've never figured it out for the price point?
Collection. Though bakelite mags aren't true bakelite, they're some sort of fiberglass thing and look like bakelite. But really not worth the price otherwise.

The Russians switched away from steel because, while it was robust, in the cold condensation can build up and cause rust between the steel which would later cause it to come apart. Plus they were lighter. The reason why the Polish and Germans had steel 74 mags was because they didn't switch over until after adopting 5.45.
