So, I have a set of police wood from an 870, but it isn't the normal walnut, it's orangish colored wood. Is it still walnut? I thought that's all they used. I want to strip it and refinish it, but I want it dark.
Done soooo many stock repairs. Strip it, personally I use a piece of picture frame glass held at a 90 degree angle and draw it with the grain with a little patience you can remove 95 percent of the finish in a few minutes, no stupid chemicals. To get the color right may take a combination of stains. and then finish it off with boiled linseed oil.
a few other thoughts:
walnut can be avery light colored wood
get creative and use a REAL shellac, personally I think it makes a great looking finish.
