There is supposedly a mechanism where those wide flat hardcast slugs actually don't penetrate as well above 1600 fps or so. After running 420 gr Wfn slugs well up into the snot knocker zone I gladly backed down to 1570 fps for my 45-70 carry loads. I haven't done any comparison testing on my own on this subject, but I do know my load does not lack in the penetration department. Here is a link to one write up on this phenomena.

I remember reading that, heavy projectiles at moderate velocities out penetrate deeper than higher velocity rounds.
 
If you can make it down to Eugene. I would take you out and let you shoot my 450.
Just a fair warning though. Big bore black rifles can be a bit addictive.
Not like 44 cal. addictive but close.
My next build will be the 458 socom eventually.

I take Garretts "science" with a healthy dose of salt as he is often full of himself and onesided in his beliefs. My thoughts on this topic though conveniently align with his, mostly because I am a wuss these days when it comes to excess recoil o_O.
