PLEASE DON'T RELAX

While many Oregonians are looking forward to the Superbowl, Floyd Prozanski and Ceasefire Oregon are working overtime to try to pass a firearms registration bill.

Make no mistake, if this bill passes they will be back for more.

In 2000, the anti-rights extremists said "gun shows" were the problem. So they took millions in out-of-state money to pass a ban on private trades at gun shows.

Now they say the problem is a firearm you give to your best friend or father-in-law!

If they succeed in passing this you can rest assured they will be back to ban virtually all modern firearms just as they attempted in 2013 with House Bill 3200.

Ceasefire Oregon has asked anti-rights extremists to "PACK THE ROOM" on Thursday Feb. 6 when they say Prozanski will be hearing SB 1551.

There is still no official schedule showing this bill will be heard, so we can only assume Prozanski has sent advance notice to his friends while providing no information to the public. (The new "transparency" at work.)

Ceasefire says:

"The majority of those testifying will be members of invited panels (people who have been pre-selected by the committee to speak at the hearing)."

If they are right (and apparently they are privy to info being hidden from you by Prozanski) this could well mean that Floyd is preparing a dog and pony show front loaded with anti-gunners. (Gabby Giffords?) That's why it's essential that you make your voice heard loud and clear. We cannot let Floyd's backroom deals destroy our rights.

It's no secret that the anti-gunners will say anything and do anything do ram through their plans to disarm all of us.

While Prozanski is telling people that "each month in Oregon, an average of 190 felons are denied access to guns because of background checks..." his cohort and fellow traveler, Senator Michael Dembrow, is reporting "Under the current program approximately 800 requests are denied each month.."

Right, and 86% of statistics are made up on the spot.

What none of them want to talk about is the Department of Justice report that said of the 2393 people who received denials when they tried to purchase guns in 2010, a whopping 90 were arrested. That's less than 4%!

For Senators Prozanski or Dembrow or Roblan to try to pretend this charade keeps guns away from felons is a joke.

With your help we have beaten these people back time after time. Now they are counting on a flood of cash from New York billionaire Michael Bloomberg to help them buy votes. Your action is critical. Please consider using this link to let the legislature know where you stand.

Dear Senator,

I urge you to vote NO on SB 1551. This bill is a registration scheme pure and simple. It does nothing to prevent felons from getting guns but is an unwarranted invasion of my privacy.

Vote against any restrictions on private transfers.

Yours,

Dear Senator,

I strongly urge you to vote NO on SB 1551. This bill is a firearm registration scheme pure and simple. It does nothing to prevent criminals from obtaining firearms, and instead places an undue burden upon the law abiding citizens of Oregon. This bill will be essentially unenforceable without the addition of a hugely intrusive firearm registration program. There will be no way for law enforcement to know if a firearm was legally transferred under the proposed SB1551, unless ALL firearms within the State have been registered. Which means all firearms currently within the State would have to be processed through the State Police ran background check system. This is a system that already struggles with its current workload, it would be incapable of processing a post SB1551 workload without a huge expenditure on new staffing and equipment.

How would firearms that are legally transferred outside of the State of Oregon be handled by this proposed legislation? What incentive would firearm owners have to use the Oregon background check system if they could legally complete the same transfer in a neighboring State?

I will be watching this issue very closely, with an eye toward the upcoming (re)elections.

Vote against any restrictions on private firearm transfers.

~Signed~

Emails sent, phone calls to follow.

Thanks Taku for keeping us informed.

Still nothing on the Senate Judiciary schedule and all other bills have been assigned a day and time. They do meet regularly at 8:00 am Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in 343. The Oregon Alliance to Prevent Gun Violence has a Facebook event page about it.
The Oregon Senate Judiciary Committee will hear public testimony on Senate Bill 1551 (SB 1551 :: Oregon Legislature Bill Tracker - Your Government - The Oregonian), which requires a criminal background check before any sale or transfer of a gun.

Are you part of the 80% of Oregonians who believe it's time to close the "private sales" loophole that makes it simple for criminals, the mentally ill and domestic abusers to buy a gun? Then join us in Salem on Thursday morning and show your support for common sense gun safety legislation.

Please plan to arrive no later than 7 a.m. for the 8 a.m. hearing time. The hearing will start promptly at 8 a.m., and end promptly at 10 a.m.

Be sure to connect with Ceasefire Oregon or Moms Demand Action - OR to learn how you can submit written testimony if you can't be there on Thursday.

Please RSVP here if you'd like to hook up with other attendees and carpool: <broken link removed>

It appears that they have at least 23 people who have Facebook accounts going with who know how many others planning to attend, we need to meet and exceed this.

Does anyone else find it odd that SB 1551 is the only bill that is currently unscheduled and that supporters of such a controversial train wreck of a bill were informed when the bill is not scheduled? I don't know if this is actually against any law here, but at the very least it is dishonest and is a perfect example of dirty politics.

Anyone, feel free to keep area this updated.
I got sidetracked today. Thanks to those that
keep this area centered on this issue.

I've received replies from Roblan, typical we'll keep it under advisement and Kruse who seemed genuinely annoyed that SB1551 was even proposed.

Kruse did mention that he had received hundreds of emails about SB1551, which is great but thousands would much harder to ignore. If you haven't already sent an email or called, it only takes a few minutes to do it. Even a copy/paste of Taku's sample at the top of this thread would do.

Only 2 days left to be heard.

Close is also a NO.
Johnson will be a no also if it gets there.
