Hello,
I have a bit of a small problem. I have 3 receivers and 2 are identical but one is a bit different. In the last picture. The far right one has additional holes in it compared to the other two. Can anyone help me with this. I was looking at getting an Yugo M72B1 RPK 7.62x39 stamped parts kit and putting it together. I'm just wondering why the other one is different and will that be a hinderance to using the RPK kit with it? Any help is much appreciated. I was unsure if this belonged here in gunsmithing or not. (Admin/Mods If it needs moved please do.) NFS

If the rivet pattern is the same on the front trunnions of the M71 & RPK, which it looks like, then you could populate the barrel as an RPK then use a M72B1 rear trunnion & pistol grip mount.

(I populate the barrel off the headspaced front trunnion, then press off the front trunnion, rivet it to the receiver, then press the barrel population back in to proper head space)

Don't forget to dimple the receiver where chamfered rivet holes are & use swell neck rivets.

The 2 additional holes by the pistol grip might be for a sling plate like this:

I'm not sure why they would be present on a receiver that already has sling loop slots but if it is it shouldn't matter and will be covered up by the pistol grip.

The other 2 receivers have additional holes on the bottom by the front trunnion. I'm not sure what those are but I don't see how they would cause any issues. They're not in the right location for a side folding stock latch (which may not work with a bulged trunnion anyway) and I don't think they would line up with the bullet guide rivet either.

All 3 have the holes for the M70 dust cover latch drilled. They aren't necessary for an M72 rear trunnion but also shouldn't be an issue.

If he wants an M72 (Yugo RPK equivalent) why not just use M72 parts for the front end instead of (much more expensive) Soviet/Romanian RPK parts?

The two additional holes are for an underfolder stock set. They allow you to drift the pins out and serve no other purpose. They shouldn't be on that receiver.

Thank you for the reply. I won't know if the rivet pattern is the same until I get the kit. The research I have done say's it's possible. I'm going to be doing as much of the build as I can with the simple tools I have. Then it's going to a local gunsmith for the riveting, head spacing, and threading the barrel.

Good luck on your build boss!

Hey what's the name of the gunsmith that builds AKs?

He's an older gentleman that's retired from gunsmithing. But he has done jobs off and on to just keep busy. I haven't had the opportunity to talk to him about the build yet. He's a member here the range I work at.
