thought I read the 70 redfield is for prewar Winchester model 70.

These measurements from EGW for their base will tell whether or not your base has the most common version of hole spacing.

If not a match, tell us your base's spacing. I can get farther into this question if needed.

According to a 1960 application chart, that Redfield Junior mount fits Winchester Model 54 and Model 70 rifles with serial numbers below 66350. It does not fit the Magnum action, which is longer.
 
Ignore the 4th (rear) hole in the diagram. See if the others match.

M70's did not have the receiver bridge drilled and tapped until post WWII. Mounts made by different companies before that would match the front holes and decide their own location for a rear hole, to be drilled and tapped. Post-war they used the factory locations.

I learned a neat trick the other day on how to easily measure the center distance between two screw holes with a digital caliper.
You measure the width of one screw hole with the inside jaws, zero the readout and then measure the total width of both screw holes.
The readout will then give you a true center to center measurement.


Here's a more detailed breakdown:



  1. 1. Measure the hole diameter:
    .
  • Use the inside jaws of the caliper to measure the diameter of one of the holes.
  • 2. Zero the caliper:
    .
  • Before removing the caliper from the hole, press the zero button to set the display to zero with the caliper jaws touching the edges of the hole.
  • 3. Measure the outer edges:
    .
  • With the caliper still in the "zero" position, measure the distance between the outer edges of both holes.
  • 4. Read the measurement:
    .
The digital caliper display will now show the center-to-center distance between the two holes.
