Why is my rifle barrel stamped 7.62x51 instead of .308?

Holy Necro Thread!

Ok, both my M-1A And FN/FAL are both marked 7.62X51, and yet both run commercial .308 interchangeably with no change in reliability, accuracy, or bolt velocities, especially the FAL which would be sensitive to this!
