I need a light for a railed 1911. i just want a white light. No lazerballs blah blah. I'll pay for a Surefire if that is my best option, or whatever else might be top of the heap in terms or reliability/durability.

This would mostly be for within the home or other close-in environments. The surefires are mostly 1000 candle power, which makes me hesitate, thinking it's gonna bounce off an interior wall and overwhelm my eyes. A variable power light is maybe a good idea if I carry the pistol when hiiking, where 1000cp is perhaps better? (It is 10mm, so a good woods gun.)

Any thoughts or recommendations?

Pahhh, just get a 4 cell Maglight and rock the Harries Technique

Whichever rail / light combo you come up with be sure to check holster compatibility, last I looked there are some holes in product lines

JMHO and YMMV and all that, but I think that is more of a What If concern than an actual issue. I have a 1,000 CP light and have (with it off the gun) walked around my house in the dark, lots of light colored walls, a couple mirrors and only 865 sgft and it was only an issue when I pointed it directly at a mirror

The surefire 300 variants seem to be the best choice, especially if you think it's going to just get sold or traded away by next year.
Yeah good point. I could imagine getting all girly-giggly excited about a new model. And/or deciding to try something else.

Don't get taken down that path of having too much light. Have never heard anyone say...this light is too bright...I can see too much.

There are ways of toning down a bright light, but you can't make a dimmer light brighter.

A lot of lighting techniques can be done with a bright light, that are harder with a dimmer light.

I also recommend carrying a handheld.

During CQB training in buildings with rifles, those lights run way north of 1,000 lumens, and are never a problem.

for me, in my limited experience, I need to turn down my handheld light for indoor use (it goes up to 1000 lumens). Ive tested it getting up in the middle of the night when I'm groggy and not really awake, bam... blinded with any setting above medium (150ish lumens...?). I find the second lower end setting to be just right and would still blind anyone else whos looking right at it. I'm not certain if adrenaline would change how quickly my eyes would adjust in a real use situation indoors.

I also use a 10mm 1911 outdoors for hunting and camping. I can tell you outdoors at night you cant have enough light. I have a Fenix PD36 TAC variable power 3000 lumen handheld for outdoor use and its amazing how much that thing lights up the woods. I don't have a WML on my 1911 but I'm also not convinced one needs a WML, I'm also convinced it cant hurt and having another option is a good idea.

Best light for a 1911 is none at all.
Well....

Surefire X300 Turbo is what I'd recommend- less lumens more candela. These two are NOT the same thing, though you'll find that there is often an inverse correlation. Higher candela lights tend to be a bit warmer.

SureFire X300 Turbo

• 650 lumens

• 66,000 candela

SureFire X300 Ultra

• 1,000 lumens

• 11,300 candela
