"For me?!!!"

One of my cats had his 17th birthday June 1st. Which is kinda old for a cat. I take him in for elder cat visits at the Cats Exclusive veterinarians. This year, he was diagnosed with hypertension (high blood pressure). In a cat, who knew? I'm guessing most don't live long enough to come down with this, but whatever. So now I give him a daily does of Amlodipine, the same drug I take for hypertension. The cat gets a smaller does, of course.

I mean, I didn't even know they could take a blood pressure test on felines. Yet they have two methods, one is a miniature cuff as is used on humans. In the case of my cat, the diagnosis didn't start with the test. The vet was examining his eyes and noticed some small anomalies that are associated with the onset of hypertension, which led to the test.

I give the medication using a thing called a Pill Pocket. Basically, it's a cat soft treat with a cavity in the center. You put the medicine in the hole, then squeeze it shut. Very sneaky. But in this case, my cat just gladly accepts it as an extra treat. And it has been working; his BP went down 50 points.

So my poor pup Mur had an event.

I let him out in the backyard a few times a night to go potty and just explore. Haven't had any incidents so far. I've mentioned before that my house seems to be an internal suburban transit corridor for small critters; raccoons, opossums, skunks etc..

Friday night, while he was in the backyard, I heard a terrible, long whelp. I've never heard that sound before. So I ran outside, shouted his name, and he came slowly crawling back to me...eyes closed...completely doused in skunk.

Poor guy. I immediately carried him up to the bathtub for a 30 minute soap and eye washdown. He recovered after about two hours hiding under the blanky...but the house...well I had to air it out for going on three days now. I still smell it. I bathed him again today, better but not perfect. Wife is going to try a tomato paste bath tomorrow if it's still bad.

He learned a big lesson there..

☝️That right there! ☝️Shoulda been the first thing...
Yeah, I know...but it was late at night and I didn't want to make a trip to Winco. My thought was if it bothered the little lady so much, she could drive. But she didn't either. Meh. We've been married a while.

Righteous bro of mine had a bad experience a couple days ago.

His cat of many years that had been on her last legs went missing - until his neighbors called him and told him she was on their back porch and couldn't move.

He went over and picked her up and brought her home and discovered she had fly larvae on her which is well, an end sign.

For a pretty grizzled old 'biker' this friend has a serious 'soft spot' for his pets and he sadly told me what he 'had to do'....

I can handle about anything. Haven't cried since my first marriage went sour 20 years ago. But when it comes to my pup, I can't even imagine...

When Daisy got sprayed last year I used hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and a wee bit of Dawn dish detergent. That cut the order right away.

Fortunately it was mostly chest, front legs and a bit of her snout. She got a half bath that night and the next day couldn't really smell skunk. The smell showed up at the groomers about 10 days later, when that warm bath activated the skunk oils again…

Has Daisy been recently skunked? They asked when I picked her up. Oopppsss….

We always have baking soda on hand as the wife uses it when laundering workout wear. And we have a stash of peroxide, as a first aid and blood remover thing…

Well..I immediately crossed off anything on my list because it was in his eyes. I didn't want to make his pain any worse. I don't think peroxide or baking soda would have been good.

I feel ya!
Not sure If I have a bottle handy right now, but Doggy Face Wash and/or Puppy Shampoo unscented is what you use on their face and around their eyes! it might take a couple applications, but it works miracles for my Newfies as it did on my past Golden Retrievers who seemed to be hell bent to hunt down every skunk in the county!
For a full body wash, I found Mint Castile Soap works better then any other method at getting rid of Skunk, though the Tomato sauce/juice works quite well, it's pretty harsh and not good to use around their face and eyes, and will absolutely cause an ear infection! Be extra careful using ANYTHING with Mint oil, it will burn, it is harsh on sensitive areas like faces and eyes, as well as Hygiene Areas, fortunately, it dilutes very well, so it rinses off nice and quick!
For any lingering smells, Get a bottle of Main and Tail Horse wash shampoo/conditioner, that will absolutelt get rid of any lingering skunk sent, and leaves your floofers coat nice and shiny and tangle free, Trust me, I have Newfies!
