.556 NATO, .223 REM and .222?

When I was in the military, we often practiced with .222. It was left overs from a bygone era. I know that you can shoot .223 REM out of a rifle chambered for .556, but that you can't or at least shouldn't fire .556 NATO in a rifle specifically chambered for .223 REM.

Is it case dimensions? Pressure? And where does .222 fit in? Perhaps that was the reason that I missed expert by one shot?

Looking back, I wish that I had shot on base more. I mean after all, the ammo was on Uncle Sam's dime. Instead, I was doing medical stuff and chasing after chicks that worked in the base hospital with me.

I'm under the impression 5.56 nato is loaded to a higher pressure which is why one can shoot .223 Remington out of a barrel chambered in 5.56 but it is ill advised to shoot 5.56 nato out of barrel chambered in .223 Remington.

If I recall the 556 chamber throat is longer to relieve the higher pressure, this is why you cant/not supposed to fire the 556 in a 223 chamber.

Yeah we had some trainers in .222 and some in 22LR. The 22LR trainers were for guys who had never shot before or were requiring remedial actions to overcome poor fundamentals.

It was so long ago that we still had M1 carbines in the armory and SP1's or M16's that had no forward assist.

I recently picked up a new Colt AR-15 rifle that was as close to my SP1 as possible. Standard 20 inch. A2 stock. Carry handle removable though. I changed the the round hand guard to a triangular one from Tony;s Custom.

They aren't flimsy plastic but are supposedly glassed Bakelite or some such. They don't;t flex when you squeeze them like the old M-16 a triangular plastic hand guards. The have little locking tabs that keep them from moving around. You can squeeze em pretty good and they don't flex.

The barrelmis 1/7 twist I have t2 gr M855 and some 77 gr tungsten black tips coming. I wanted to get some varmint rounds for possible home defense. So zi likely will be looking at .223 REM for that.

But I didn;t know if .222 was able to be used in my rifle, and after seeing the article you guys provided. Obviously not. The rifles that we used the .222 in were mega old and chambered specifically for them.

222 is an interesting one. They came out with the 222 Magnum and it almost became the m16 food. I was close to snagging a very old Remington 700 222 Magnum, which is on par with the 556/223, a Dillon and a pile of reloading stuff from an older gentleman. He unfortunately decided he wasn't ready to offload it.

For years I have been hearing that I should not fire 5.53 in a .223 chambered rifle. I have never heard an account of someone damaging their rifle by doing so.

Yeah. I was in my 30's before someone explained to me that they weren't the same round. They shot really well in my .223 TC Super 14 Contender. I don't shoot them anymore except in my AR-15 under the "why take a chance" doctrine.

.556 NATO, .223 REM and .222? Which is better? Discuss...

Is that better @Tlock ?
That .556mm ammo ain't very big, just over half a millimeter wide. Can it even touch the sides of a .223" barrel?

My problem is I'm having a heckuva time finding .223 Wylde ammo.
