Its been forever since I had been up there, maybe stop at one of the roadside spots to shoot a bit on the way to the coast or something...

this time I went up this weekend to take the kids camping and found that pretty much ALL of the little offshoots from Salmonberry Rd have been bulldozed!

also noticed that gates have been put in at Salmonberry, Section 10 and Shields Rd.

Whats that all about?
I see the gates marked 'closed for fire danger' so I assume they close it off if theres a fire.... but whats with blocking all of the roads????

Some of it is to lessen the trash impact, others it's because it's on the list to get logged.. some areas did not have proper back stops..

I'd actually love to know the exact reasoning though!

Two of my favorite areas were "closed off" like that.

That's the NEW Oregon! Block the public from public land. And lease it to timber companies to turn it in useless underbrush.

(Granted that closing it off during high fire season has become necessary) It's the Close or Barricade, rather than "Enforcement", plan.

I dont blame the timber company's for locking everything up, it sucks but people where trashing their land and the resource they grow. I have to disagree with you on the timber company's turning it into useless underbrush. The private timber company's in my area do a far better job managing forests than and government or state agencies. We should have private company's managing our timber for us, not the government

It's open, I just hadn't been out there since the gates went up

It appears they only close the gate in case of fire....... Which sucks if you're trying to get out of the woods in case of fire😂
So then what roads are they blocking?

Are you talking about the popular shooting spots right off hwy 26? Did they buldoz those in?

Once you turn onto Salmonberry there are all the little dead end roads that you can turn off onto... Good camping spots & other small shooting areas.

Kind of place you can pull into and setup camp and have a little backstop for 22s/pistols

Several of them have had trenches dug across the intersection with berms on either side

Ah, got it now. Thats different... the main shooting lanes there are not closed then.
The tieretary forest roads are closed due to an active logging operation on both sides of Salmonberry rd, not surprised.

Maybe too many homeless? I remember posts last couple years complaining about that.

By law (in Oregon at least) private or public land, must be replanted when logged, unless it is rezoned (rarely does that happen - OR is very strict about this, but it can be done; e.g., rezoned from AG/FR to AG only, or a small portion rezoned to include a residence).

The only times this does not happen is when the logged land is abandoned - logged then sold before replanting. Large timber holders don't do that - although, AFAIK, the next owner assumes the liability.

Usually it is very small plots like mine (I did replant) where replanting doesn't happen due to negligence or ignorance of the law. A good logging contractor will include replanting in their contract, but some leave it totally up to the land owner (it is the owner's responsibility, not the contractor).

The roads were closed because of the active logging operation there. They should be done but the forest service probably wont reopen those side roads for habitat reasons.

What happens if someone were to fill in the trench and drive on thru?

Kind of thing they maintain or just one and done?
"..fill in the trench..."

Way to much work, try this instead.

There are many roads in the State and National Forests that have been gated and closed, and trenched for many years that have not been reopened since whenever they were dug/gated. Edit. There are also several roads that have been blocked by past landslides/rock slides that have not been cleared at all.
