I live in Washington my son in law lives in Oregon. Is it against the law to borrow a shotgun from him for a period of time?
If it's in her name maybe, if it's in his name, no.
I say maybe because you need to know what Washington's transfer law is. Direct immediate family members can gift a gun in Oregon, just not sure about Washington.

If the shotgun is the type that is considered an "assault weapon" by the new WA law, then gun cannot enter WA legally. I don't know about legality if it's a standard shotgun that's not considered an "AW".

Asking a question like this on the net if a POOR way to find advice. If someone here tells you something and you do it and you get in front of a black robe you going to tell them "well I read on the net this was OK?" Think that will work? Both state and Fed laws on guns are 0nline now. Often reading them can be a challenge but, asking for legal advice on an open forum? :eek:

immediate family transfers only work within a single state. Crossing state borders, you gotta go through an FFL.

Your'e talking about a transfer. A transfer is a change of ownership. He's talking about a loan. Its OK with he feds. State laws may differ.

US Code TITLE 18 > PART I > CHAPTER 44 > § 922
§ 922. Unlawful acts

(5) for any person (other than a licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, licensed dealer, or licensed collector) to transfer, sell, trade, give, transport, or deliver any firearm to any person (other than a licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, licensed dealer, or licensed collector) who the transferor knows or has reasonable cause to believe does not reside in (or if the person is a corporation or other business entity, does not maintain a place of business in) the State in which the transferor resides; except that this paragraph shall not apply to
(A) the transfer, transportation, or delivery of a firearm made to carry out a bequest of a firearm to, or an acquisition by intestate succession of a firearm by, a person who is permitted to acquire or possess a firearm under the laws of the State of his residence, and
(B) the loan or rental of a firearm to any person for temporary use for lawful sporting purposes;

What is the intended purpose/use of the shotgun gunna be? If it's just hunting/shooting clays I wouldn't worry about it. Personally.

If you need the shotgun for home/self defense I would advise having the firearm in your name. Again just a personal suggestion.

Most things go unnoticed and I wouldn't worry about it. I also wouldn't publicize my actions.
