Tool head holder

So while I don't mind spending money on worthwhile items, I often like the challenge to make my own and while sometimes I do save money, often times I end up spending more than the store bought option, but alas I enjoy it so....
I currently run a Dillion 550 and have 6 heads set up with dies on them for the calibers I reload most often. Currently I set the assembled heads into my cabinet which isn't optimal and I always worry about bending a de-capping pin or something. I know Dillion sells tool head holders for like $40 bucks a piece, but I'm thinking about making my own by turning some aluminum or delrin plastic down and mounting them to a small shelf on my bench. I'm sure some people on here have made their own at some point and I'm looking for ideas and or suggestions.

The old Dillion tool head holder was just a turned piece of aluminum in a press wood base.

Thought about making my own toolhead stands for my 550s and 650 toolheads. Researched some different DIY designs, but ultimately found a good deal on some used Dillon cast aluminum ones (thanks to NW Firearms member misterarman). Figured after I gathered the materials, and invested the time involved to make my own, this was a better option for me. Plus, if I ever downsize, Dillon stuff bought at a good price usually sells at a later date easily for a fair price.

You'll find lots of different Dillon tool holders for very reasonable prices on Ebay.

i found a peanut butter pretzel (the square one) container to be exactly the right size to use as a tool head holder for my Mark 7.

I have 750 heads and 550 heads all there ready.
Replacing the 550 bases next week when the new inserts arrive.

That system looks pretty cool. I notice most of these holders have spots for the caliber conversion kit as well. The shell plate I'm not so worried about, but having the shell holding pins sitting there seems like a recipe for losing one or more if you happen to bump the mount or something. Have you had any issues with the pins getting knocked out?

If somebody bumps my pins, we're fighting and somebody got slammed across the reloading bench... or I have the ol' lady doubled over it. They absolutely do not get bumped since they are on the wall. Requires intent to reach.

Unless you're tap dancing or having a party on your reloading bench against the way, the fear of losing one is a little irrational.

You'll need the wall mount. Count how many you need and order enough rail +1 for the length desired.

I have 6' of rail and could use a second row to help with organization.

I have 10 heads and 10 of the Dillon head holders (I definitely didn't pay anywhere near $40 each for them 30 years ago). I have never used the shell plate holder or the pin holder on them. I only have 6 shell plates that cover all 10 heads. The shell plates and pins stay in the Dillon clear blue boxes along with the case feeder tube adapter and shell ramp for my 650.

If I were going to make my own head holders they would would just be an aluminum/delrin stump mounted on a block of wood (counter sunk into the wood of course).

Even if you don't order the ebay head holders I would imagine they might be good design inspiration for making your own.

I have 3d printed the Dillon tabletop ones for myself and would glady print some for you if interested. They're not the fit and finish of a Dillon but they do the job well.
