Enduring design. A good alternate history science fiction novel titled "The Guns Of The South" shows Robert E. Lee holding an AK47. The book is a little bit about time travel. The novel would have been more realistic and doable, (in my opinion only) if the criminal time travelers had gotten 200,000 Mosin-Nagant rifles instead of the AK47s. Just me.

Harry Turtledove. The Guns Of The South.

Even US soldiers were issued Mosin Nagant rifles made in the US when they were sent to Russia after the 1917 revolution during the ensuring civil war. The Army figured that they could get ammo for them easier locally than if they were equipped with 1903 Springfields which ammo would have to be shipped to them. For once the Army made good decision IMO.
