Nicholas Kristof's New York Times Gun Control Article | National Review
It is true that guns are occasionally used to stop violence. But contrary to what the National Rifle Association suggests, this is rare. One study by the Violence Policy Center found that in 2012 there were 259 justifiable homicides by a private citizen using a firearm.
A quick internet search reveals that about 1000 people/year are fatally shot by police, so the private citizens' share is around 30%. Not too bad, in contrast to what the NYT is trying to imply. Can someone please post some more accurate numbers?

Let alone the incalculable number of crimes averted just by criminal minded knowing that the public may in fact be armed...
Right, from the article above:
Nobody but nobody is quite so dumb as to believe that all, most, or even very many uses of firearms to prevent acts of criminal violence result in justifiable homicides. Most of them do not result in anybody's being shot, much less shot dead, because most of them do not involve discharging a firearm. As it turns out, pointing a gun at a would-be assailt is in many cases a very persuasive gesture.

Until these "Gun Violence Groups" focus their energy on fixing the inner-city killing fields, their "Data" will be met with a yawn.

This is a typical misleading use of statistics by gun control advocates:

implying that the only way guns are used to "stop violence" is to KILL the bad guy (justifiable homicide) when in fact the overwhelming number of times guns are used defensively (defensive gun use or DGU) the bad guy is not killed or even wounded. Merely brandishing the gun or firing shots that don't wound or kill the criminal stop the violence.

The same misleading use of statistics is the often referenced notorious Kellerman study that stated a gun in the home is 43 times more likely to be used to kill a family member or "friend" than to KILL an intruder.

One study found that when a gun is present in the home, that gun is 43 times more likely to kill a family member than to kill an intruder.
Guns Endanger Rather Than Protect

First, Kellerman included any person who was known to the person who pulled the trigger as a "friend" or family member. So if two rival gang members knew each other and one shot the other, that counted as a "friend" being shot. Second, Kellerman only counted the number of times intruders were KILLED, as if that was the only way guns stopped a crime. This is a very poorly done and misleading study, but it was published in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine so gun control advocates cite and wave that study and other junk science studies like it around as scientific "proof" that guns are bad and gun control is effective.

The actual number of DGUs per year is controversial

because they are not officially tracked the way gun use in crimes and suicides are tracked, and many DGUs are not reported.

Apparently the anti gun site with that stat is at odds with the CDC's numbers in the millions.

This wouldn't be the first time I saw this, I think it was the family fire statistic.

It's so stupid, going to an anti gun website to find evidence supporting why you should own firearms. This is like going to the NRA to find out why you shouldn't own firearms.

And while your at it why don't you go down to the the used car dealership and ask them why you don't need a car.

Some people are dumb as a bag of rocks.

I have a one word response....

Chitcargo!!!

Go do something about BHO's hometown, Rahm Emanuel's safe haven and the party that currently holds the House of Representatives, Utopia... Yup, 52 shootings this weekend, 10 fatalities and more than 90 firearms confiscated...

November 2020 we need to make a clean sweep and begin again...
