I have a really sweet Savage 12 GA. Over/Under. It is my favorite Trap gun. I haven't shot it in a while (over 10 years) and the barrel is starting to form a rust tarnish. What is a good strategy to fix it, or how much of a discount would you apply if selling?

Here's some pics.

Is the receiver aluminum on that? As far as the barrel, I wouldn't be too concerned. I would wife it down with solvent, and the after it's dried and wiped off, I would oil it.

If you are storing it in a safe with fire protection, I would get one of
Those desiccant cans, and put it in the safe, as the drywall they use for fire protection off gasses moisture and sulphur fumes and can rust your guns. Put a light coat of oil on your guns regularly.

Howdy, like Andy stated the bronze wool and oil works well without removing existing bluing. With heavy rust a real cooper penny and oil. Just use edge of penny and scrape the rust. There are quite a few different remedies.

Cleaning with
Kroil Oil or Break Free 0000 steel wool white cloth tee shirt towel
Gentlely / lightly circles not so much back and forth
Try this on your Beretta O/U BL-1

The best way to remove light rust is the same way rust is removed in the rust bluing process. This not only removes the rust but restores the bluing coating where the rust was.

Boil the parts to convert the hard red oxide rust to softer black oxide. Then use a carding wheel or oooo steel wool to remove it. A thin black oxide coat of bluing will remain. Trying to remove the rust with other methods will risk damaging the finish and does not restore bluing where the rust is.
