When shooting at a steel target(ar500) how much angle should the target sit at? Will be shooting at it with .22-.45acp. Was thinking about it and I never have shot at steel with pistols or revolvers.
Thanks

I have shot a lot of steel, and I've never tried to figure the angle. The rounds just break up on impact when hitting AR400/500 plates. I have been hit with a few small pieces, but nothing that would injure. Eyes and ears always!

And my post isn't a good answer, just my experience.

I have a lovely scar on the left side of my face thanks to watching someone shoot steel. I was standing behind and far to the shooter's right. Thought I had been bitten by a wasp at the time until I felt the blood. Everything was "kosher" with the range and targets. Still a mystery but the scar makes me look dashing. :) Be careful out there OP. Use good safety sense.

Mounting is important. The plate needs to either swing freely or be able to be knocked over. Having it hard mounted to a support where there is no "give" is the wrong way to shoot steel.

I agree with the above, either put at a 15% angle or have it swing freely.

I used 8" steel plates hung on a 2x4 frame at about 15-20 yards for pistols. I hang them on about 10" of chain. It works great. No issues, but the 2x4s are littered with bullet fragments.

If it was mounted in a solid fashion Inwould only shoot it at an angle or long range

image.jpeg My AR500 steel hang on 2 1/4" carriage bolts. Standard nut against the steel plate, locking nuts and washers to hold the chain at the very end of the bolt.

As you can see, it naturally angles downward... Hope this helps...
