Even though I've been out 26+ years, this stuff still interests me.

You don't have to watch the whole thing, but at the 12 minute mark, they do the string across a compartment. We would do this for every new person so that they have an understanding of how dangerous the ocean is and why we need them at their best everyday.

And that is why we don't quite have fleets of pirate submarines currently, even though there's been plenty of opportunities (German U-boats, Soviet/Chinese/North Korean submarines, Japanese ww2 submarines, etc). Operating and maintaining submarines takes a lot of work and logistics, too much for poor, cashstrapped thieves and bandits.
