Obviously the courts aren't interested in stopping crime. At least, not with a sentence like that.
Yeah, the only thing that year in jail is going to do is provide the guy with more business contacts. However, let's lay this one squarely at the feet of the prosecution, not the judge.

According to the news article, the sentencing judge was forced to work with the only charge remaining after the plea agreement negotiations. In this case, prosecutors allowed the (politically privileged?) SOB to plead guilty to "one count of making a false statement to a licensed firearms dealer".

From 41 counts down to just one? That's some tough as nails negotiating! Real world perspective, now: Wouldn't you just love to have that defense attorney negotiate an equivilent 97.6% price reduction for your next new truck?

I bet the guy didn't own a house. Once they figure out you have any assets, then it's a whole different story.
I was thinking the same thing. We have to often call police for problem customers. I have seen them time and again let the scum go free or even give them a ride to where they need to go rather than jail. If they don't have money its hard to get them taken to jail as they have no money. I often joke with my co workers that any of us would be taken to jail in a heartbeat if we pulled any of the stunts we watch done. Since we would of course pay. 🤬
