Actually, there are a few polymer 1911s. STI, Infinity, BUL, Kimber, and RRA all make/made polymer 1911s. Not sure if any were sub-compact though.

However, aksu747, you are correct in that it is metal. A form of blackened aluminum if I remember correctly.

In general though the most popular/common 1911's are steel or alloy frames.
