  1. I have read and accept the classified system rules and terms of service.
Sporterized Springfield 1898 in 30-40 Krag, good condition as modified. Excellent function with an action as smooth as you'd expect for a Krag. 22" barrel with dark grooves but strong shiny rifling. Serial number indicates 1899 manufacture.

Comes with a very cool scope mount of unknown manufacture and a Weaver 330 fixed 2.75x scope, manufactured between 1933 and 1947. Unfortunately the elevation adjustment screw has sheared off inside the scope, so elevation adjustment may not be possibe without repair.

Sale also includes the following:
  • Some spare vintage sling swivels that could be used to replace the missing front swivel, different screws will be needed
  • 43 rounds of Hornady Custom 180 grain soft point
  • 30-40 brass for reloading:
    • 32x once fired factory from Winchester and Hornady
    • 5x Peters USG, unknown history from another NWFA member (ignore the extra 3 cases in the picture, they were incorrectly bagged 303 Brit)

Some interesting details:

The serial number 163091 is outside the expected range for 1898 carbines, but the barrel band retaining spring and lack of a filled cleaning rod channel indicate that the stock is not a cut down. It's most likely from an 1899 carbine given the 1901 inspection cartouche.

The end of the barrel also appears to have been turned down and has a hole on the bottom where a front sight or barrel band was pinned:

This stepped area seems to be too short to be from one of the "school" rifle carbine conversions for accomodating the 1905 bayonets given that the barrel is still 22".

My best guess is that it was a full-sized 1898 that had its barrel turned down to fit a bayonet lug band, and was later shortened to 22", leaving only a short stepped section, and fitted into a carbine stock. Krag experts, feel free to chime in if you have other ideas.

I'll post some additional marking photos in a comment.

Price is OBO

I have a long list of trade interests but don't want to edit a bunch of posts every time it changes, so please see this ad where I keep it maintained:
