quads have a flight time of about 10 minutes. the person doesnt have the time to loiter for more than a few minutes. count on it being a neighbor and start asking them which one it is. when you find out who, tell them to stop. if they dont after that, shoot it down.
there have already been cases of people shooting them down and getting successfully sued. if you go out there and take it down, you will be buying a shiny new one for the owner and they are not cheap. now if it were to crash on your property and you find it, it is now yours. considering the person is flying at night, be aware that they have a FPV camera system, which means the quad is not recording video, it's transmitting video to a receiver. if they get footage of you taking it out of the sky it's theft. if you get creative and find a way to take it down without showing anything (including how it happened), then they cant do anything about it. they will know if you shot it down. maybe look up radio jamming signals. just dont do it unless you cant get the person to stop with a simple request.
for the record i dont fly anything over peoples homes, nor do i own anything that could. i do however feel that in general there is nothing wrong with it. of course we have seen in the news there are some people who have found ways to make it wrong. you should also know that they have to fly pretty close to get a good image of you or anything else smaller than a car. even the good cameras that are light enough to put on them have trouble with good resolution. around 50 feet $1500 cameras show you as little more than an ant and the images barely get any better past that.
im all about personal privacy but you will need to consider this when you decide to take a legal risk that could potentially cost you thousands of dollars. if youre on 20 acres, there are only so many people who are close enough to fly to your house. try knocking on doors before knocking things out of the sky. it could save you a lot of money.
Uh huh, and people go to nude beaches for the great sand and NEVER the visuals, buy Playboy for the articles, and porn and nudity is rare and unheard of on the internet. I wonder if any junior Electronic Engineers have designed signal injectors yet to possibly interrupt the pilot's transmitter. I have actually considered this and could have an idea for an effective, non-firearm based device that might quietly down them."i doubt they had malicious intent and likely had no interest in looking at people."
This is one of those examples of a legal right, that when abused, results in loss of that right. The public is getting uneasy about drones "snooping" on their homes and yards. The end result will be that drones will be limited in altitude. It may end up that a drone may not fly over private property, without written permission from a property owner, below the altitude that the FAA allows manned aircraft to fly in that area. It may not be allowed to fly above that altitude either, because it might consitute a hazard to airplanes.
Sort of like open carry. It is legal until enough people alarm the public enough to insist that it be banned.
Burden of locating the owner in NOT my responsibility and it goes into the shop woodstove. If I am out of city limits and one of these is flown into my proximity, or appears to following me then it gets 'splashed'.What if you can not locate/contact the operator?
well mj i think you are being a bit selective in what you decided to take from what i said. you and i clearly feel the same about looking into windows. you also are going on the assumption that you will not be recorded destroying someone elses property that they are flying through public airspace. unfortunately for you, the courts have ruled that you do not own the air above your home. people that own these things should be respectful of others privacy and if you dont want them flying over your home, they should stop when asked but you will not get away with shooting it down.
also Doc i think that you and i said the same thing as far as resolution. am i wrong?
youre sounding dangerously similar to a liberal. rash decisions based on unfounded emotions without any logical thought. the fact is, they are not going to get an image good enough to give them kicks without getting close enough for you to throw a rock at it. if its that close you may well get away with it being dangerously close to you. otherwise you are just making a bad choice.
you may be right but it will not come to legislation until they are capable of capturing much better images at much lower prices. the fact remains that you just cant shoot it down just because you dont want it there. i cant see that many people here feel very strongly about it but its something that is going to cause problems. not just for the individuals but possibly gun owners as a whole. the person will file a complaint with the courts and win, because they will have recorded the entire thing. this is not me siding with the person doing it, this is me saying dont do something that could have a negative effect on all of us by making a big deal out of something before taking to your neighbors about it. its likely the person just didnt put any thought into what they are doing.
now oli700 may be on to something with the skeet shooting, you would just have to time it just right.
I think there is some fun that could come of this. First, put away the firearms because they will draw the wrong attention to the problem.
I propose the Civilian Operated Counter-Drone. The COC'D would be armed with stainless steel break-away leaders to jam the rotors of the nuisance drone leaving it COC'D up.
I apologize...it has been one of those days.
Kevinkris, you seem to know a bit about this stuff, what do you recommend for a lower/medium cost unit, that is the most bang for the buck?? I see that some are in the 10 minute to 34 minute flight time. What features should I be focusing on?
On the event, that occurred the other night, even though my wife does not believe in UFO's per say, I can tell you she was pretty shook up, and until I explained what I thought it actually was (a drone) she was in fact entertaining the possibility.. and was VERY frightened, dare I say, for her life.
