Trump was once a card-carrying Democrat (2001-2009), and even said in his book (The America We Deserve, while running for the Reform party) that he supported a federal assault weapons ban and longer waiting periods. He changed his tone only after going for political office as a Republican. I'm not sure where he really stands on 2A issues as I can hardly believe anything that comes out of his big orange head. :/

Speaking only for myself....

I don't believe a damn thing any of my so called elected representatives have to say about the 2nd Amendment or firearms.
Other than.....
More laws , bans , restrictions , requirements and the like , are headed our way .

In any event...
When listening to elected officials.....
Often what they don't say ...is just as , if not more important than what they do say.

When being given information it is helpful for consider :

What information is being given to you...

What does that person stand to gain by giving it to you...

What does that person stand to lose by not giving it you...

Why did they choose this time to give you that information...

Why did they choose the words they used....

How was this information spun / made to sound....

Is this information accurate....

What was left out....and why....

I truly love my country....but also truly mistrust my government and elected officials.

I can hardly believe anything that comes out
For me, thats literally everyone in Congress, and everyone running for office. They all say whatever they think will get them votes.

What I look for is action. What have they done to protect the civil rights of US citizens?

So far; I'm seeing a little bit more good stuff in action than bad stuff.... More good picks for Federal Judges, cutting back on spending on ATF; reducing the effects of inflation across the board, though Oregon is being stupid with trying to push ever more taxes on the people :s0054:

I agree with you for 99% of politicians. Years ago, the city I was living in was having an election for city council. I received a call from a volunteer for one of the candidates. He had a view that was opposite from mine regarding usages for one of the parks (in the scope of things, pretty minor deal, but at the time, relevant for me). I told the person I would not be voting for him because of this.

About an hour later there was a knock at my door. The candidate was standing there, introduced himself, and said he understood we disagreed on the topic and asked if he could discuss it with me. (I'm presuming my name and address was on some voter info or other public info.) I invited him in and we had the most civil conversation. He explained his "why," and I mine. This must have been close to 25 years ago. He had my vote every election while I lived there because I understood he actually was interested in what people had to say and wanted the best for the citizens he served. He knew me by name every time we met afterward. He is still on the city council.

THAT is what I want from politicians. We might not always agree, but listen, and make informed, not emotional decisions.

At the end of the day....

All elected officials should ask themselves :
"What have I done for the American people today...? "

As well as remembering that they work for us...and not their own self interests.

Not one word about banning black rifles , banning high capacity magazines, or any other second amendment infringement to make me safer.
I was surprised that Spanberger didn't bring it up during the Democrat's response speech. Virginia is in the midst of passing some of the most draconian gun control laws, and she campaigned for gun control and other anti-Constitution positions.

Then to the West, in West Virginia, they proposed a bill which takes advantage of a little-known loophole in 18 USC 922(o) , Hughes Amendment, in which a State could transfer (post sample?) machine guns to qualified citizens and those citizens could possess them. If there's a thread on this, already, I haven't seen.

This is pretty funny, from my point of view and what we are experiencing in the potland area. And the state too. Our "Representatives" only represent the people that voted FOR them. I don't think I need to go into the specifics, I'll just say potland is a traffic nightmare and roads haven't been maintained for a couple of decades, or more. I'm going to send a letter to my so-called rep and ask if I can get a partial refund for various taxes and fees that we have paid during her term in office. She's that gal that said on a National News program that "We just need to, f**k Trump". Maxine Dexter. This pathetic excuse for a public rep only caters to the loony fringe of the democratic population. I'm being ripped off.
She was one of "them" that refused to be in Washington last night

I think we all hear what we want to hear.
I heard This is what I have done, and without any help from Dems. I heard him scold the Dems for not standing up for people who had earned it.
Did he brag about his accomplishments? Absolutely. But that's just Trump. He is what he is.
Growing up in NY City, I doubt Trump had thought one bit about the 2A before running for office.

At least he knows who he is. The last 4 dems running for POTUS ran on completely made up Their own story's, Kamala tried to tell us that she worked for Mc D's to get through collage, tried to rewrite her collage years, and completely fabricated her work history. Biden Would make up a story even when the truth would be better for him, O Bummer either lied about where he was born in his own book or when he took office. its one or the other.

And now we have Gavin Newsom trying to rewrite his own story as just a kid who grew up in a single parent home. Having to hustle a B Ball game for money, surviving on Mac n Cheese.
So I don't listen to what most politicians say, I watch what is going to get their base voting. And that is what they are really going to do.

Well, now the thread has descended fully into non-2a political garbage.
