the only M58s I've seen are 41 mag. Is this a rare collector item or rebored/restamped along the line somewhere?

As I understand it, rebored and restamped at SW. Hatched a 41 then got a government funded "caliber" change.

The caliber stamp isn't of S&W quality. I would guess a conversion outside the Smith factory. Just my opinion of course. Would make a great shooter....

Could be. Just going off what several SW smiths have told me. Fun to shoot though. Got it for backcountry hunting. Boat anchor!

The old timers tell me they did that 'a lot' back in the day as 41 mag ammo was difficult to find. N frame is an N frame, cylinders/barrels are not that hard to change if yer set up to do it.
