I have a chance to acquire one or both of these from a friend. My gunsmith commented that the 12-3 is a punishing gun to shoot. Its in great shape and I like the K size as I am an N frame guy. The old pre36 from 1953 is cool but maybe grow to be more of a collector than a range gun and trusted carry. but maybe not.

Is the 12 really unpleasant to shoot and practice? I shoot 357s and 1911s no problem. I actually like them better than shooting an xds or shield or a short barrel 308.

I would get the Chief myself. I find all-steel to be better for recoil, and it will be more compact and easier to carry. I find I have to practice a bit with the J frame, it's not as easy to shoot accurately as the K, but it's not bad.

An older "flat-latch" one is always a plus.
