I am wondering if anyone with a Savage A17 can remove the rear dust cover to see if it shows any wear inside like in the picture below and report back? An A22MAG will also work, but not an A22LR.
I have a Savage A17 that started having issues with feeding (not picking up next round) a couple of years ago and I ended up shelving it for a CZ457 .17 HMR. The other night I dug it out of the safe to continue that journey and something I didn't even consider before was a worn out rear dust cover. What I found was that the top rear edge of bolt is just sharp enough to scrape the plastic of the cover. IMO when the wear got down to the actual cover it started slowing the bolt down to the point that it would not travel back far enough to pickup the next round. In the end I was using a lot of M-Pro7 that would last like a mag or two and still fail. Once I saw this I got out the Dremel and polished the heck out of the rear edge of the bolt, greased it up and headed to the range. Low and behold it ran 10 mags without a hiccup. The bolt still swiped the grease, but did not scrape the plastic. From here I am going to put a slight radius on that edge of the bolt and maybe polish 1 - 2 thous off the top contact point of the hammer to relieve some of the pressure on the cover.
I have contacted Savage with photo's for a new cover, but so far they want the gun first. I'm now in the begging them stage for the part since I prefer not to send the gun in.
