Joint City Council Work Session with Marion County Board of Commissioners - Gun Violence Problem Analysis Report. Meeting will be held at 6pm on Monday 11/20 at 6 pm at the Salem Library and is open to the public. Comments on the agenda are due by 5:00 pm the day of the meeting.

Here's a link to the meeting agenda. At the bottom are links to the study itself, the powerpoint presentation, and summary.

I think the attachments are worth the read. Be aware that the study really doesn't come up with anything that we hadn't already suspected, i.e., the majority of people that shoot other people are criminals, and the people they are shooting are mostly criminals as well.

Think I might go to the meeting just to see how it's run compared to the Marion County Republican monthly meetings.

Wait just a sec....

I reviewed the pdf info docs and didn't see "firearms with legs randomly popping off at passerby's". Did I miss something?? 🤔

You're right though. Not a thing in there was anything we didn't already know.
Known criminals and prohibited persons "criminal'... the same as are the vast majority their victims.

Maybe the plan is "how do we make law-abiding gun owners criminals?"

So.....what does it cost?

But, I suspect they won't like any answer that involved THE TRUTH.

Aloha, Mark

PS......Rrrrrright......because, certain questions can't even be asked now a days.

The meeting didn't really open up anything new and there was no discussion on how criminals get their guns. Salem police chief made the comment that they can't arrest their way out of this. Several people made the case for school security officers.

In any case, this was a preliminary study and there was no clear path forward except that they will think about it. Community involvement and more police officers was a common theme for moving forward.

Went to another one of these town halls Friday evening. Here's a write-up by Salem Reporter. Was interesting since they had people break into groups with topics to look for possible solutions. I left with a bit of frustration after realizing that all they did was to have people give presentations and then the organizers solidified their own recommendations and plans. Seems their main recommendations are community "peace walks" and use of ""credible messengers". These two methods are supposed to reduce gun violence against homeless since they supposedly reduced overall violent crime in Oakland.

Not a single word about gangs, cartels. They touched on mental illness and fentanyl, but not a single suggestion for reducing the impact. Not a single word about personal safety or how to law abiding citizens can avoid being victims of crime. I found the whole thing rather disgusting and insulting. They were purposely leading people by the nose, and not even pretending to listen to suggestions or recommendations.

For me, it reaffirmed the hard truth that we are responsible for our own defense.

"The idea for community peace walks was presented by Ben McBride, CEO and co-founder of the Empower Initiative, a California-based organization that hopes to foster stronger community relationships and a structural sense of belonging as an antidote to community violence in Salem. He's consulting with the city of Salem as part of city efforts to reduce shootings.

McBride said the peace walks helped reduce gun violence in the streets of Oakland, California by 50% over five years. "

I call steaming piles on that one!!

From a March report from the SFC:
"Overall, reported crimes in Oakland rose 18% in 2023 compared to 2022, with violent crime up 21% and property crime up 17%."

We're taking lessons from Kaliferationites that have done such a peachy job in their own state and are known to lie through their teeth to deny how out of control it's become down there?

Unfriggin believable! If I was in Salem leaders shoes I would be doing exactly the opposite of anything that guy suggests. The whole nation has seen what their "great ideas" have done to their cities. Stupidity is doing the same thing over and expecting a different result.

Just sayin...

So... openly carrying firearms and armored up?

Oakland, California

"In 2018, WalletHub ranked Oakland as the 7th most Culturally Diverse City and 1st in Ethnoracial Diversity in the U.S."

"With a crime rate of 81 per one thousand residents, Oakland has one of the highest crime rates in America compared to all communities of all sizes - from the smallest towns to the very largest cities. One's chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime here is one in 12."

Because the city doesn't seem to be very effective, except for holding meetings, I've decided to go ahead with the Refuse To Be A Victim classes. The course was designed by NRA and the course outline is here. So far, I've got two scheduled. The first will be Aug 3rd and the second Aug17th. They run from 10am until 2pm. Cost is $35. I've reserved the VFW hall in Salem for both. May have other classes at other locations as this goes forward.

To register, send me an email at [email protected]. PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. I also have a facebook page for the class here.

I specifically pursued the training and instructor quals for the class in an effort to help give people a way to stay out out trouble by being personally prepared. I tried to find other instructors but those that were qualified had other priorities, and weren't able to get any classes scheduled.

So far, there are around 12 people signed up for each of the course dates. I can do about 20-25 to a class.

OHHH, got a quick on the draw did we? :D

That's great that you are engaging the a solution to the problem that local government has caused but does not seem to care to find a viable solution. :s0155:

A close relative of mine does quite a bit of work with the Salem unhoused population. He asked some of the main players about the event, folks who actually make a difference in the community, and no one had engaged them to be part of the event. I'm sure we all have the same surprised face.

Pre-whooho flu, Oakland homicides did decrease. Everyone likes to take credit for this. But their programs were still in place over the past few years where shootings and murders have skyrocketed. Are they taking ownership of these increases 'due to their programs?' I think not. There is quite a bit out there about the City of Oakland cooking the books on crime stats, which they deny. But of course they are. I've preached this numerous times, they are not taking reports on nearly any crime unless there is a dead body, viola, crime goes down.

I think someone posted about the gas station that was mob robbed (using force and fear, so yes, a felony robbery). It took police hours, like 10 hours IIRC to show up, since there were no suspects present. Well yea! Nothing left to steal.

Coming to Salem and Portland at the present rate. (Okay, some of it is already here.)
