Considering picking up a Mini 14 or a M1A, curious to hear some opinions and experiences. The Ruger is half the price so.. there is that.

And less than half the gun...

Yeah, but it takes five shots and some luck to hit anything with a Mini 14, so the M1A is more cost effective per hit even though it's more expensive per trigger pull.

I carried an M14 as a designated marksman a long time ago in a land far, far away so I might be biased. There are better weapons for social work but if you have a coyote problem then the Mini-14 would do fine. Just call em in close. Anyways, have fun and don't name it Charlene….

I have a 180 series mini14 that I tried a few things on. Shortened the barrel to 16.5", squared the bolt face up so it slams into the receiver squarely, had a trigger job done (not by me), bored for gas port bushings, etc.
Went from 6"+ groups to 2.5-3"

I love the looks and handling of the original series. I truly wish they had been more accurate or I'd still have mine.The newer more accurate ones just don't have the same aesthetics. I always dug how they were the functional equivalent of an AR but looked like a normal huntng rifle. At the time they were also a much better value.

You can't polish a turd. The extra $460 or $630 gets you a genuine wood stock mini 14/30. Even a stainless model, which adds to the mini's durability and beauty.

If you can afford it buy both. Get the "loaded" m1a. Heavier barrel and better trigger. I currently have one. I have an AR for my 556 needs, but would actually prefer a mini 14.
