I am wanting to make my M77 Hawkeye more accurate and comfortable to shoot. I want to start with the trigger. I'm guessing the trigger is over 6lbs. Any advice from you guys on tricks to fix this trigger before I spend the money on a Timney and start filing metal away?

You can buy lighter springs for them and if you polish the sear and trigger surfaces you can bring it down quite a bit ..
Otherwise I have had good results with Rifle Basix and Timney trigger kits.

Thanks shad appreciate it! I've been tossing it around for a while getting a Timney or not. Problem is they're not a drop in trigger you have to file and remove some material to get them to work. Finally decided to go for it recently and can't find one online now. Go figure.

eBay has Rifle Basix triggers and they are easy to install and work great.

Save yourself the effort of a trigger spring. It's not much of a difference.
The Hawkeye trigger is slightly better than the old 77MKIIs, but very similar. I ended up buying Timney triggers for our MKIIs. Fitting the safety takes a bit of time and patience, but the end result is worth it.

Brownell's shows them in stock.

The trigger that came on my Ruger Hawkeye Long Range Target is an incredibly light 2 stage, clean takeup and break.

I love it...

Perhaps it would be compatible with your Hawkeye...
