Roll Pin not fully setting in gas block

Hi all,

I've been struggling with this roll pin and getting it to fully set through the tube, it was fine going through just the gas block but will not fully set with the tube. The tube is stuck in place and won't move but I'm wondering if I should order replacement pins/tube or if it's fine to leave a few mm sticking out.

It looks like it's through the notch in the tube.
That 5/64 punch isn't the right punch at this stage of the pin drive.
Do you have roll pin punches ?
And a good block to bear against ?

Personally, I'd pull it out and start over. I 'suspect' somethings not lined up.

That's what my punch looks like, I also tried vice grips

I got it to almost flush but flared out the very end a bit too much, should I just get a new rollpin?

Yeah, if it's flared I would get another roll pin and have a do-over.
The trick is to drive it home with as few licks as possible.
Be using a good block so your strikes are meaningful and not wasted on a lousy block set up.

Check the gas tube for any damage.
Check the (new) roll pin (mic it) for correct length and diameter.
Use a little oil to help the drive.
Use a correct diameter drill bit (backwards) as a "slave pin" to hold the gas tube in alignment.
Use the correct size roll pin punch.

If the new roll pin has any burrs on it, chuck it up in a drill motor and spin it against a file.
Don't over do it, but a very slight taper will help the drive.

Roll pins are cheap, get a new roll pin. Good local hardware stores will have them for cheap. Get a few while you are there.

Use a flat faced punch to drive it. The button end punches can have a tendency to flare small roll pins. I won't use them for this reason.

And use a brass punch if you have one..

Thanks for the thread OP. I almost went nuts as the roll pin punch slightly flaired the roll pin on same block as in your image. I used SRAM butter as a lubricant and brass punch. Thanks again.

Had the same problem today with a SA adjustable gas block. Had to go to Ace Hardware to get new roll pins. You can chuck up the roll pin in a drill and run it across some sandpaper to bevel the end to make it easier to start into the gas tube hole. I think the trick is to use a roll pin starter punch and a good firm and padded surface so you can get the pins going in straight.

Removing the mushroomed pin without scratching things was a pain in the rear!

The roll pin stater punch is one of those "journeyman's secrets"
You can drive over half way before switching over and without any flaring of the pin.
Also no danger of slipping off like a flat punch.

New pin is in order. We ran a drill bit (by hand) thru them to check for obstructions.
