Unfortunate circumstances leading to my series of road trips this month, looking back at the rough numbers of the statistics for 2 trips in October over 11 days (264hrs) as the sole driver...

Miles driven: 8,700
Hours driven: 145
Drive periods: 5

Average miles per period gas and go: 1,740mi

Average hours per period gas & go: 29hr

Thinking about it, I was driving for more that 50% of the total trip including sleeping time when I was not driving...

2 oil changes, 2 tire rotations, did the first trip in 72hrs roughly over 4300miles back in July not included in these calculations.


I think this will be my limit for a long time.


Anyone else do anything like this? I'd like to think there are others that have done similar trips....

Sheesh. My idea of a long-haul drive is every late August or early September when I drive from home over to the far eastern side of the state. That's a nine-and-a-half-hour drive. Hunt for somewhere between seven and twelve days, then drive home.

I worked 109 hours in 7 days with 2 stops and home for showers and most of it was driving around fixing problems.

Idk if that counts though.

I put over 1,000,000 miles on 5 fleet trucks in 10 years.

We've put 22k road trip miles on my truck in the last 2 years. But, it's just been a bunch of West Coast trips, nowhere near the duration you did.

I drove 100% of those miles, 50% of which were with our teenage boy who constantly needs to stop for food and restroom breaks. Makes the trip seem to drag on....

The truck I have came with a 5/100 warranty, I'm doing everything I can to rack up the miles on it under warranty I wanna get my money's worth!

Nothing quite like your numbers, but I did drive back and forth between Portland and San Diego dozens of times between 1977 and 2002. Always straight through just to get it over with.

The mental calculator was continually grinding away, monitoring actual vs. average speed, mpg, how many miles/hours left, halfway points (fractions completed/remaining), total gallons, cost per gallon, etc. If you're anything like me, you just can't turn that shjt off.

It always amused me to chug coffee in a Denny's somewhere, still averaging 65mph even while sitting still in a booth wolfing down a Grand Slam.

Strange Experiences:
On two consecutive years in the early 90s, I left Portland late-morning on January 1st, which had me speeding through SoCal at 3-4am on the 2nd. Both times I woke my family up to show them a few miles of ZERO traffic on I-5 in Los Angeles. Flippin' eerie, kind of apocalyptic...

In my youth I could drive all day without stopping. In my older age five hours one way with a break and five hours back would be my max. Currently the truck I drive doesn't agree with my right leg and I cramp up in a couple hours if I cannot set cruise control. My potty breaks are every couple hours now verses in my youth.

I just did 700 miles on the coast heavy haul in two days and I'm pooped!!

I was in that spot on Thursday and took this photo...


I was online and found the first picture I posted.......if you look ahead of my red truck you will see the back corner of my boss with his load peeking out from behind the tree. He was hauling this...


And yes, driving this kind of stuff on those roads takes a bit more than just running down the freeway. We had the grove to get through and several construction areas that only left us six inches to spare to squeeze through. The grove was the worst as we needed more than one lane and had to time meeting traffic to clear the trees and cars. In my first picture you can see a refection of another big rig in my visor with a white tarped load I passed before I snapped the photo. Then we fought Bay Area and Sacramento traffic to deliver the loads.

Me too, can't hang these days without a pit stop. But my son and I have done a few long runs moving him all over hell and gone. Modesto Kali to Rathdrum Idaho then Rathdrum to Modesto and back to Rathdrum a few times. One trip back home to Kali had 2 Explorers pulling trailers, a 22' dully box van towing a car hauler, with a lead car, the day after Christmas in a blizzard for the first 400 miles. When were about to book, he tells me he just put a junkyard engine in the Explore I'm piloting, hasn't really test run it and the trailer lights are on the fritz! Chicago to Rathdrum to Modesto via Boise, 9 days including layover visits. Rain with no wipers for the first 400 miles in the AM, then turned to snow in Montana with 50MPH wind at -20 degrees in a $300 Isuzu with a hole in the floor (stuffed with towels as to not freeze to death). Atlanta to Kali nonstop, 52 hours (fresh Craigslist valve job, his first in a V6 Ranger). He burnt a vale in Norman Oklahoma on his way to South Caralina and had to learn to change out the heads. Rathdrum to Corbin Kentucky, 5 days. Stopped just before sundown each day. Then he got promoted again and transferred back to Rathdrum and picked me up in Kali on his way to Idaho. For the last 6 years worked seasonally in Pingree Idaho 1K miles from home. Only drove straight through once. The other times I stopped in Winnemucca or Wells. PAX

WAY BACK. Lemme do the math... . 50 years ago buddy and I would drive straight through from Salt Lake City to Portland on a sightseeing, partying, camping trip. We'd leave SLC after work at 5:00pm or so and drive through the night. Back then we had some of those little white pills. Did that kind of thing again a few years later with with a wife-to-be from San Francisco to SLC. That's the best way to cover all those flat desert miles.

In 2004 when my youngest boy wanted to learn how to backpack, we'd head out after work, drive up into the Seirra, get to the trailhead in a couple hours, head off with the crew in the dark if there was a good moon. We got after it pretty hard, packing once a month, starting in February at Angel Islang in the middle of the SF Bay, and go until September. Started out strong, 6 - 16+ packer youngsters until 2014, then as usual, life happens, but we had some great pack trips, a few hunnerd miles all told. One year I took my boy and 2 of his buds to the Yosemite Mountaineering School to learn to free climb. They also kayaked and a few were certified divers. It was a great run and I put at least 30 rookies on the dirt, I'm a "Leave No Trace" instructor. PAX
